Spotify got scraped by Anna's Archive

The wonderful people at Anna's Archive have recently taken a backup of almost the entirety of Spotify!
Archiving art (books, video & music) is, in my opinion, very important and we don't do it enough.
But it also takes a lot of storage capacity. And it will only take more, with more and more content being automatically generated (and imo, not worth backing up. But it's difficult to tell what's automatically generated and what not at scale)
Read their blogpost to find out how you can help with the archiving.

Anyway, I want to share a few stats that they've shared on their blogpost. (I'm just gonna offer my thoughs, you should definitely read the full blogpost if you think this is interesting)

What's interesting about this graph are the spikes at 2 and 4 minutes. I think these are probably AI-generated songs, told to be 2 or 4 minutes long and because they're generated by AI, they do exactly what they're told.
But it could just as well be any other reason. I dunno. Feel free to tell me if you know.

I ask myself what the reason is for Germany having the most songs on their version of Spotify.
Do they censor music less? Do they have a lot of music (or maybe audiobooks) exclusive to Germany?
For anyone wondering: PR=Puerto Rico, BY=Belarus
Use this two-letter country code table if you need to.

The graphs about genres are in my opinion the most interesing, even though I don't think Spotify is any good at assigning genre to music.
But let's assume these stats are 100% correct. I'm really happy to see black metal, death metal and hardcore punk on here. Black metal being this high seems so suspicious though. And christian hip hop? Being in the list at all? That seems wild to me.
I assume that opera, choral and chamber music, while being the top 3, have the least listens per song on average out of all of these.

It gets even more interesting when combining all the genres into categories. You might wanna open the image in a new tab to zoom in a bit.
I'm so happy to see black, death and doom metal so high up in the rock category. But it seems we need more melodeath.

I wonder what these stats would look like without automatically generated music…

This really surprised me. I guess it makes sense, I've seen many artists that plaster their page with thousands of singles, but I thought it was something much more rare.

Anyway, that's all. Definitely read the original article if you've read this far.
